Magnepan LRS

Magnepan LRS “Budget Loudspeaker of the Year”

“a slam-dunk winner of TAS’ Budget Loudspeaker of the Year Award for 2020—or for any year”
The Absolute Sound magazine, January 2021.

The LRS is not your father’s first Magneplanar

For decades, the SMG and MMG made the introduction to Maggies and high-end audio for thousands of music lovers. The majority of customers getting started had modestly-priced receivers or integrated amplifiers. Consequently, the SMG and MMG were designed for the limitations of receivers with relatively low power and low current capability. The LRS is a radical change in our marketing strategy.

In the 70’s and 80’s nearly every small city had a stereo store(s). Today, most customers have to drive a considerable distance to visit their nearest Magnepan dealer. The MMGi “appetizer” program enabled customers who did not have a Magnepan dealer nearby to try the MMGi in their home. But, the MMGi (like all previous entry-level Maggies) had performance limitations dictated by low-powered receivers. But, what if you own $10,000 or $20,000 speakers? Why would you want to audition the LRS? Actually, we had you in mind when we designed the LRS.

The LRS (Little Ribbon Speaker) is a full-range quasi-ribbon speaker that was designed from the ground up to give you a pretty good idea what to expect from the 20.7 or 30.7. The LRS was designed using high-end electronics and mono blocks. The LRS will perform nicely with a receiver, but it was intentionally designed to extract the most from high-end amplifiers and electronics. The LRS expects more from a properly designed high-current amplifier. That is a radical departure from most entry-level loudspeakers. If you put your expensive high-end amplifier on the LRS, you will hear the difference.

Perhaps you heard Maggies somewhere in the past but were not impressed, maybe it was the sound room or setup or associated equipment. The LRS 60-day, money-back, home-trial program allows you to sample Magnepan's full-range ribbon technology for $750 pair in your home against the very best box speakers (at any price). We hope you will take the challenge.

What is a ribbon speaker?

Ribbon and electrostatic speakers are elegant and simple.
The air is moved and sound waves are created by moving
an ultra-light film or aluminum ribbon. Ultra-low mass
enables the ribbon to respond quickly to the electrical
signal from the amplifier. What you hear is higher definition.
